You’re walking, running, biking. But how far are you going? Whether you are training for a big race or just keeping count of the steps you walk each day, a fitness tracker is an essential piece of equipment. For today’s Tuesdays on the Run I am linking-up with April from Run the Great Wide Somewhere, Patty from My No-Guilt Life, and Erika from MCM Mama Runs. And today we are talking fitness trackers.
You already know I LOVE my Fitbit. (Well, mostly.) I wear it every day, all day. (Well, most days.) Earlier this year I told you about my love/hate relationship with my Fitbit Flex and described some of its features. I also reviewed my previous Fitbit Force. You know, the one that was recalled for causing rashes on some wearers. Not me! I loved it, so I kept it. It is very similar to the current Fitbit Charge model. Check out my previous post to read more.
While I wear my Fitbit all day, I also wear a Garmin Forerunner 110 for running. In fact, I wear them together. For me, they are the perfect match. While the Garmin keeps track of my mileage of the moment (and over time, if I download it and track it online), the Fitbit counts all my steps for the day — including the run.
But, back to the Garmin Forerunner 110. This was a Christmas gift from Brett three years ago. It is now discontinued. And maybe for good reason. While it does a good job keeping track of the miles, I don’t love it, for a few reasons.
- Difficult to charge. The Garmin Forerunner 110 has, in my opinion, the worst charging cable of all my electronic devices. It uses a four-pronged “pincher” type clasp that you have to perfectly line up with four tiny indents on the back of the device. I never, ever, get it right on the first try. Even after three years of use. Sometimes I walk away thinking it is charging, only to realize at 6:00 a.m. on my long run days that it did not charge and is nearly dead. I know there has to be a better way!
- Routinely dies completely. About once every few months, something happens inside my poor little Forerunner 110 and the entire screen goes blank. Zilch. Nada. Dead. I Googled the remedy and it’s basically hold down all four buttons at the same time for several seconds (not as easy as it sounds). I’m not sure why, but at the price point, this should not happen.
- Does not work as interval timer. I know there are newer versions of Garmin Forerunners that alert interval runners when it is time to walk or run. The 110 does not do this. I had not discovered the joy of interval running when I first wanted a Garmin. But a timer is a must-have at this point in my running life.
With all this said, I do plan to buy another Garmin at some point in time. I think Garmin makes good products. And the GPS tracking is dead-on. I just don’t love my Forerunner 110.
